French concealable percussion pistol, 1850 - 1860s,

hammer cocked

while common percussion weapons have the hammer visible on the side this little pocket pistol has it hidden inside the shaft. Two triggers, the bigger one to cock the hammer, the smaller one to fire the shot. Barrel is 4", octagonal with swallowtail front- and rear sight, rifled, caliber .32. To give the barrel more strength a metal band is around the grip and barrel. The grips are beautiful carved and decorated with German silver studs. Under the barrel somebody stenciled RHONE (the famous French river) The ramrod is missing. Certainly a very uncommon pistol made during the 1850 - 1860s.
With a strong spring in good working order and fine condition.     $785.
