Kuhn, Besançon,
Støckel: circa 1850
Le "Qui est qui de l'arme en France": inventor and gunsmith in 1860 - 1875. Kuhn, Besançon,

empty compartment for powder

odd system single shot percussion pistol, no visible serial #, 9½" octagonal heavy barrel with dovetail front sight. The caliber is .42 percussion. On the end of the breech is a lever which after pulling back allows the piston block to swivel 90° for loading with powder; turning it back and holding the pistol down the powder will slide into the rear of the barrel. On he right side are a pair of massive springs to hammer the piston. The pistol is ½-shafted with a fine plain grip and checkering under the lock, with a massive butt cap. The trigger guard has a finger hook. The barrel shows circa 50% blue mixed with a pleasant patina, the other metal parts were in the white and have darkened. There are only very few pistols made by Kuhn and apparently hand-finished and different. Scarce pistol in very good condition.    $4,350.

J. H. KUHN À BESANÇION

J. H. KUHN À BESANÇION made pistol in the style of Remington's Rolling Block, no serial #, caliber is probably 11mm French, 9" barrel with maker's name on top flat and dovetail front sight, movable rear sight on breach, the barrel is dark patina, the lock shows casehardening and the channeled grips with a massive butt cap remind of the dueling pistols. During the percussion period Kuhn made a complicated system, later he obviously decided to produce something simple: a Rolling Block. I did not see another French made pistol with this system. It is in good working order, fine condition and rare!    $2,000.
